How can you take such a general rule? You are of couse basing yourself on your bad experience, but I would not say "every Italian is this way". Listen also to other turists' comments http://www.1milliondollarphoto.com/phototrips-sicily.shtml

Why are you insulting the Italian language? Doesn't matter, let's go on.

Are you sure they were attendants? Maybe they were something else. Anyway, you are making wild assumptions saying they were telling you the wrong way, it is unusual and usually kids can make such a joke to you, it happened also to me...attendants do not act that way, and if they do you should go to the Station Head and tell to him. He is always kind and has the power to kick away such bad attendants. I know, you were on holiday...

Next time use the automatic ticket machines, they can tell you the path also without buying the ticket and they're multilanguage

True. They are evenly a ripoff, but they raise the fee with tourists...

That's why your point of view is biased. Simply don't expect anything and don't make a general case, I wouldn't.

I hope things will change and that you will come back. Please don't make such a bad advertizing since the scenario is a bit better than you draw it.

What planet have you people been living on to not know that Italy and Italians suck. You don't give the world the scum of the mafia and whining cheating corrupt football without a reason. These things are just a reflexion of themselves.

I'm very sorry you had such an unpleasant trip.  I went to Venice/Florence/Rome last summer and had a very different experience.  Everyone was very polite.  Shop-owners were all-smiles.  The gondola pilot was very kind and told us about what we were seeing during the ride.

I don't know anyone that really loves the country of Italy, I've never heard of anyone wanting to move to Italy.  I've travelled all over the world and discovered Italy to be very superficial.  Italians are caught up in the image they present.  Presenting a good image is by no means a bad thing!!  But they take it to another level where it becomes their life.  The country is more obsessive over Formula 1 racing than North Carolina is about NASCAR.  I know several bakery owners that actually shut down their stores to go home and watch the race with their families, and when Ferrari losses EVERYONE IS IN A BAD MOOD!  I'm sure Italy is the best place in the world to be after Ferrari wins a World Championship F1 race.

I was kicked out of a resturant after basically proclaiming that I thought Italian vehicles sucked during a conversation with the owner!!  KICKED OUT FOR MY OPINION ABOUT CARS. -ridulous

GUESS WHAT? THE TITLE OF A TOPIC IN THIS FORUM IS "I LOVE ITALY"

-MMMM...USUALLY WHEN ITALIANS ARE ABROAD AND MEET LOCALS FORCE THEMSELVES TO MAKE COMPLIMENTS ABOUT THE COUNTRY THEY ARE VISITING.
ONCE I EVEN TOLD A FINNISH GUY HOW GOOD THEIR FOOD TASTES....
IT SOUNDS A BIT UNPOLITE WHEN A FOREIGNER COMES TO ITALY AND SAY THAT STUFF SUCKS.PLUS FERRARI IS FERRARI!
LIKE IF I WENT TO BRITISH RESTAURANT IN THE UK AND SAID "I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY A shi*TY MONARCHY, EVEN A PARLIAMENTARIAN ONE, CAN SURVIVE IN A SO-CALLED CIVILIZED COUNTRY!"....

I personally love Italy and Italians. I have worked and lived all over the world. I have lived in Italy before and move back yo Italy later this year. I am very, very happy with this.

For Italians image is indeed very important and it can be difficult to keep up with something that is a part of someone elses culture. But similar statements can be made about so many other countries. No where on this planet is perfect and 'one mans meat is another mans poison'. You should also not arrive in a foreign country and expect everybody to speak your language.

For me it it seems this thread is of people who have stayed in the tourist areas on short trips. That means you never saw the real Italy or the real italians. Its like going to Disneyland and saying you have seen America!

Thank you for stating some common sense.I think if I talked badly about American industry in America. I might have to dodge punches before leaving the bar through a window! Same in most countries

mrmerman,

It is as you do not hold a European passport. You should see it from our perspective when we visit the USA! You can wait for hours and I am British!!!

As for Italians, travelling to and domestically in the USA is five times as bad. I travelled across the USA with an Italian girl. She got pulled by security at every point and had a full baggage search, etc. It was really humilating for her and she is well educated girl from a good family with no background. Her English is even better then mine.

From this experience I would say that Italians are treated the worst in the USA out of all the European nations.

It's because you don't know italian. There are lots of dialects in italy. Probably you didn't understood. AND DON'T INSULT ITALY. Most of the world's inventors were from italy

I want to move to Italy. Italy is a beautiful, amazing country, much better then the US. I studied Italian but I didnt get to visit the country yet. I can't wait though. I am very sorry about your unpleasent experience but still want to try italy out for myself. Many of my friends and family visited Italy and loved it. My italian teacher lived in Milan for 11 years, he loves it.

My name is Eleonora and I'm from Italy. Now I don't know why you had such an unpleasant trip to Italy but with all due respect Italy is the best and most welcoming country in the world so I doubt that they treated you badly just like that. It was probably because you went to Italy with a bad attitude. I live here in the USA and the more I stay here the more I notice the Americans feel like they are Superior to the rest of the world and so if you go to Italy with that attitude no wonder they treat you badly!!!! Americans are also very ignorant so they don't understand much thats why they enjoy to make comments on great countries like Italy, because their country is too fuc*ed up.

Stereotyping isn't that nice. I am American and i feel U.S.A is a decent enough country. Really bad leadership true and i will agree alot of americans believe we are the "cream of the crop" which obviously is not true. But from your statement, it shows me that every country has their asshol*s ;)

Sorry to hear about your experience. I wouldn't go so far as to say all Italians were rude, I didn't encounter all Italians but I'm sure there are plenty of good ones with nice manners. However, like you, I was very surprised by how much rudeness my fiance and I encountered on our recent trip. I don't I expected anything in particular, I never had high hopes of being treated like a queen, I mean there are rude and nice people everywhere, but for three days we were treated worse than we have ever been treated by people who took our money with one hand and would have just as soon flipped us off with the other. We tried speaking Italian, tried being nice and just wanted to see the city we'd read so much about without acting like obnoxious American tourists.  We were laughed at to our faces, ridiculed in Italian (up until I retorted in Spanish that I understood what they were saying), ignored by wait staff, treated badly and cheated by hotel staff, taxi drivers, and mistreated by strangers we had simply said hello (in Italian) to. The city was actually very dirty and badly kept, I was shocked that even ancient monuments were overrun with trash and cigarette butts. We really wanted to like Rome, but we hated it. We'd always heard that  Parisiennes were rude, but our three days in Paris were lovely. The people we encountered there were very accomodating and helpful. As long as we tried to speak French they seemed really sympathetic, this was not the case in Rome. I'm sure there are a lot of Romans with better manners, but we only met two (Lorenzo and Alfredo, thank you) who treated us kindly.

as a matter of fact, there werent many inventors from italy
if you want to get technical most of the inventions that the italians claim they invented were actually invented by the germans you idiot

italy is the worst fuc*ing country in the world, i wouldnt waste 12 minute of my time going to such a fuc*ing horrible country full of egotistical self centred people

and it just makes me right when i call italians self centred...saying most inventors were from italy...fuc*in moron
