wiktor wrote: Wow! Sounds they are really organized. Probably there were plenty of people caught on this schema. But one thing bothers me. A friend of mine didn't get this letter via email, but via post office! How could they find his address and name? One way they could do this is polish phone book which seems unlikely because it is rather unreachable outside Poland (or you have to know polish language to find it in internet), the other way is that they have already bought his data somewhere...I will warn him to watch out for any weird correspondence. Thanks a lot for explaining the mechanism!
The catch 22 is: Western Union lets anyone collect the money from any of their offices around the world.. Polish phone books or Polish operator fishing for victims..? either way.. the letter is a generic mail-out & researched names/address is used. people from all corners of our wwworld have received this same letter.. This morning I received a letter from the International Lotto Commission from Madrid, Spain, dated 15 January 2009. The letter states I have won a ton of money and that this is the "Award Notification Final Notice". I have seen other scams, but only via e-mail. I have never received an e-mail from this company, BUT I have been to Madrid, Spain within the last two years. Just know that with technology being as advanced as it is, NO personal information is protected. If you travel abroad, you fill out the little paper on the airplane before you arrive on which you give your personal information (ie. passport info, address, phone number, why you are there, where you are going, etc.). Many of these scemes are highly organized and are designed to be nothing more than a way to defraud individuals of their money and their identity.

I'm so sorry to read this.. And yes dear kodachrome44, this clearly shows just how low these SPAMSTERS are.. they are 100% indiscriminate criminals..
Kindest possible regards,
