Your best bet for apartment hunting is to be there and look around for yourself, rather than rent sight unseen before you arrive. Perhaps stay in one or more in-town guesthouses to get a feel for the city, its logistics and your comfort level getting around.
I'd recommend Blackbeards Hill above Government Hill for starters, though it's probably more pricey than some of the guest houses below it at sea level.
A lot of places rent by word of mouth, another reason to be there while looking.
From personal experience, I once house sat in one area of Charlotte Amalie. The near all night music and activity, followed by roosters in the morning was not what I expected from city life.
Apartments for rent are most prevalent in the Islands Trader, less so in the local Daily News. The link to both newspapers can be found at http://www.viclassifieds.com
There are some good downtown maps and information in the local phone book, also linked from that site.
An interesting aspect of the city is that the off-island Danish city planners planned it on a flat table. They didn't realize how steep the island terrain was coming out of the sea, so accommodated reality with stairs everywhere to connect terrace and street levels. One famous set is "99 Steps" on Government Hill. If you can successfully and routinely navigate around the city on foot, you'll be in the best shape of your life !
Bon chance !
