For those of you that are unfamiliar with Puerto Vallarta, there is a lovely Botanic Garden about 25 minutes outside town (on the road to El Tuito).
There is a fantastic display of Mexican vanilla orchids (as well as other orchids).
There is abundant wildlife and "kept birds" on the grounds.
It really is a treat.
Puerto Vallarta is one of my favorite passions.

I second the vote for a visit to the Botanical Gardens. Went there during my last visit to PV and enjoyed it immensely. Some good hiking trails as well as the flora and fauna. A nice resting area, as well, with good food and drink.
One of the locals I know grows orchids, and another is a botanist, both of whom were with our motley group.
If you're not renting a car, the bus ride is easy and fun, and a good way to see some of the outlying area.
Hope it's permissable to provide the link to the Botanical Gardens...nice website

The "El Tuito" bus will drop you off right at the gate - just walk up to the table and pay the admission (it was reasonable). When you are ready to go back, you will have to cross the street (stay WELL off the road - because it is a blind curve) and walk 100 yards south to the clearing. There is a roadside shrine. We (In New Mexico) have similar shrines in the front yard (statue of a virgin in an upright bathtub enclosure). Our local custom usually includes colored mosaic tiles.
The bus comes every 20 minutes or so -- be sure to bring water - it is not uncomon for the bus to come around the corner and not see you. If you don't read the name on the glass and wave him down in time, you might end up waiting another 20 minutes.
Often there are local ranchers at the shrine with a string of horses. For a modest fee they will take you on a short ride up the hill (on their ranch) to ancient inscribed rocks. It is quite nice, and a really good reason to PLAN to miss the bus.
