I just returned from Scandinavia, and I noticed a particular fondness among the Danes and Swedes (mostly among the Danes) towards America. I might be wrong, but that's just the impression I received.
Perhaps it's largely due to the fact that a quarter of all Scandinavians emigrated to the USA in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. Or the firm alliance planted by NATO... or maybe the business ties and intermarriages among both worlds.
Along Puget Sound in WA state, there are entire suburbs and towns that are demographically Scandinavian by origin; "Olson" and "Frederickson" are names you'll very frequently encounter in these (my) neck of the woods.
Russians on the other hand, are to this day wary of America and Americans.

| Ninteenth centry accounted for the Danish emigration because of the conscription of eighteen year olds for the war with Germany. Many Danish familys will not support military force. Their upbrilnging was to read the Bible and learn to ride a horse. Nothing else. Germany won the war and took a part of Denmark and following WWI it was offered to return it to Denmark. Denmark said it would be up to the people in the region to decide, and they chose to stay with Germany.

Denmark has been at war with the German state(s) ca. 10 times... 1864 war was the second last war against Germany.
Denmark brought the 1864 war upon itself... we had an agreement with Prussia that we would let the German minority in Holstein keep their German culture. but we didn't keep our promish... and BANG war with Austria-Hungary and all of the German states. the danish army lost... big time.
as a final humiliation they build a victory column decorated with captured danish cannons..

Think about it? A small country like Denmark would provoke a country the size of Prussia to go to war? Could the culture change have infringed on Danish in the area? Like Georgia today. What was the excuse used by Russia. The military of Georgia is defeated. Can the people ask the Russians to go home now?
The USA is a villain for going into small countries to regain the will of their people from insurgents or villianous dictators, but will withdraw when people object to their being there. The USA also wishes to remove any threat against itself. Prior to WWII, Europe allowed a drug head to eventually draw the USA into a war it was unprepared for. Hope it dosn't happen again. Hope all the USA men can come home someday.

the reason that Denmark dared to provoke a war was that we had just won a war against Prussia in 1850 ... not even the danish commanders could believe that we still had our border a few miles from Hamburg.... Denmark then agreed with Prussia that Holstein should be a duchy within the danish kingdom and the germans were allowed to teach German at their schools and speak German at public meetings(we lied).
the funny thing is that the danish media see it as if georgia brought the invasion to their own lands... unlike CNN and BBC there see it as 100% russian provokation. georgia is the same size as Denmark and the 1864 war have many parells with the georgian crisis... they made many of the same mistakes we did.
btw. in your studies on danish emigration have you ever come across the the name Wilsted.? they are a branch in my family which moved to Pennsylvania around 1910.. they came from Jutland.

Your comment on speaking a foreign language and having foreign language in schools reminds me of happenings in the USA.
South of the US border is Mexico which is a rich country with new oil fields etc. But the wealth is hoarded by only a few, and so many people come across the broder to have benifits such as hospitals where treatment is recieve and payment is not a factor. Their babies can be born in a good clean hospital, and there are jobs for the undocumented alien. That is because since they are undocumented they pay no tax and therefor employers can hire them without providing tax withholding or a group benefits such as hospital insuruance. Of course, this creates unemployment for many US citizens. Now to get a job teaching school you must be bilingual in English and Spanish. All signs are in two languages etc. etc.
I see Russia is focussing nucliar weapons on Poland now. Please don't look for help from the USA.

Wilsted -- no. To far East of here and also in early days emigration authorities could not always understand the new emigrants and names were changed. As an example Martin Rasmusson was naturalized as Martin Holmsted. My great grandfather Timmerman named my grandfather and his brothers Steel, saying I have four strong sons so they will be named Steel. Danish pronounciation Steel became Staal in the USA.
