Sorry, I went to Italy with all the patience and fortitude I could muster for my Masters and what I was met with are people who seemed so incredibly stressed and their only relief seemed to come from making my life as miserable as possible, by lying, fraud, pretending ignorance for their stupidity, etc. I am from Greece and when I am in Greece during the summer there are hordes of Italians acting soooooooooooo nice to Greeks, it is Bizarre. They cram the beaches and then fake niceness. This is 2009 and globalisation is a real phenomenon. Don't expect special behaviour from foreigners and don't try to give it when abroad. You come across as asshol*s looking for attention because you are abroad. Hint- (No one cares) Hundreds and thousands of flights take off and land everyday. Do not act so superior and secluded because if the rest of the world is commenting about it in forums around the internet, there is usually some truth. I have not met ruder people. I though the Chinese were the worst but I think that Italy takes the cake. And please stop with the we gave the world everything crap. The worst is being caught in china town IN Italy. It is what I imagine hell to be like... Anyways the point is... the world is not impressed with your pizza, fashion, or strong family values so I say quit the shi* and practice playing fair in football. When you are done with that try to transfer some of the brand new traits to how you treat the "foreign" people you are ever so lucky to even have. Oh, and by the way, just like you used to run the world, now we do.

[fallingdown] and that's the big problem isn't it, that you weren't treated like you run the world when you went there. what a horrible shock that must have been for you.

No... I was treated as if they ran the world... and by the way, Americans don't treat students from different countries like the Italians treated me. The Italians have for the most part daily feigned ignorance and cheated me all the way through. I went there with no presupositions or bias. Just telling it like it is. When you are there watch your wallet because they will lie to you to take you money. AND if they are not doing it on purpose, they are just stupid. for example, I say I want to rent a place from mid march to untill the end of may. I get a stupid rude email saying how they will only rent a place for a minimum of two months... Hello. it is sort of charming and funny the first few times but when all replies are like this, you really start to wonder.must be all the carbon monoxide in their brains.

I have spent a lot of time in Italy and have always been treated kindly and honestly. The place I was treated badly was Athens.....could not wait to leave. Everyone was rude and they seemed like very bitter people. We went from Greece to Turkey and the difference in the people was astounding.

I went through all the comments on this forum regarding... I agree mostly that no country is perfect, however, I am also sure that some things are more evident in some countries than other...  And when someone says "ITALY SUCKS"  what I agree on is that "ITALY TENDS TO SUCK" more than other countries...

I am an Italian born abroad and now, I live and work in Italy since 11 years and have a lot of Italian friends who are really great persons, however, in Italy great persons never arrive to key positions, great persons are like cheaps in the midst of wolves...

Italy is racist, it is racist with Italians themselves, it has nothing good to offer even for its' own children...  And I regret to see Italians here confirming that Italian are very polite and that Italy is the best in hospitality...  Atl least let me say that MOST italians by far are NOT POLITE at all... and examples are too many to be able to write a whole book about that...  Italians are close-minded, and hospitality is the last thing they are good at!!!  Shal we talk about arrogance and work atmosphere, all arrogants!  In Italy, lawyers are computer analysts, biologists are programmers, psychologists are executive managers and computer scientists are into sales!!!!  guys, specially italian guys, wake up! Italy votes berlusconi and beleive me, they all view him as an idol!!  History and art belongs to humanity ALL humanity, it's not exclusevely italian!!  NO ROME WITHOUT GREECE!

Good Italians escape Italy, exactly what I will do, escape it without regrets.  I wonder if Italians who wrote on this forum have ever been to spain for example, then please tell me about hospitality...  Someone said that in Italy you get what you pay, like everywhere, talking about hotels... NO, in Italy you get much less than what you pay and more, they think they are making you a favour...

Shall we talk about universities in Italy, guys, in Italy medicine exams ARE ORAL EXAMS, math exams are ORAL EXAMS, and the fact a student gets a A or an F totally depends on the teacher's mood, there is no meter that measures one student's knowledge with other students of the same course, just mood!  Do you know that in Italy it's easy to find an electronic engineer graduate teaching ECONOMETRICS in the university!!!! RECCOMENDATIONS, this is how all Italy works, so, come on dear Italians, let us face it, ITALY SUCKS... AND HELL IT SUCKS A LOT...

I was warned that the people of Paris were snooty. I know that the French have a certain arrogance. I have many genuine French friends. But that is part of their culture. I mean no disrespect. There are definite anti American sentiments there. But not everyone or everywhere is the same in any country. I had a wonderful experience there.
When traveling just take each person as an individual and smile.
I have had many friends who visited Italy and never complained about anything except to hold on to your pocketbook in the big cities. Well, do that in any big city.

Again and again, the same old thing: there are good and bad in all groups.

I completely AGREE with I lived in Milan for few years ,studying full time, and I am really really glad to have gotten out of there…I came to italy, with a good attitude, hopeful and excited to meet some italians (I speak italian fluently,my fiance is italian) and what I got in return was complete disinterest, incuriosity, and complete indifference on the italians part..I am originally from Canada, and nobody seemed to give a shi*, plus nobody realised it was a country, most of them thought it was one of the united states…whenever I introduced myself, I was allays referred to as the “americana” or the “straniera”, and not even in a polite respectful way…more of like a jaded “oh, you’re no big deal, really” …it hurt, I was really trying hard to open up to these awful people and make friends, and I got stared at like i was a piece of shi* in public (i dress nicely, I was a fashion student)…anyhow, about 2 mnths into school, an italian guy saw me on the tram going back to my house, followed me to my place, and forced himself into my building…I screamed, I cried, it was only 7 pm,so it wasnt late….NOBODY came out of their apartments to see where the screaming was coming from…as a result, I was raped right infront of my door. I contacted the police, and they had his info, but of course they did nothing to arrest this scumbag..this happened to me on one of my first visits to italy, in 1992, 2 italian guys raped me,when I was a tourist, and of course again, the police did nothing…Im sure if he were romanian or algerian, they would have thrown him right into jail…but not their nice good italiano boys…..
When I tried to tell my italin roommate what had happened, she just gave me this look like it was my fault (by the way, I was dressed really unfeminine that night, wearing ugg boots and an old baggy black skirt and big coat,so nobody can judge me on what I was wearing, but in italy, especially in Milan, people stare, and judge you solely on what you’re wearing)…I was in Milan for 3 years, and not one italian friend…I think in the south the people are a little nicer, but I dont give a shi* when these “open minded posters” preach not to generalise about a culture…my fiance is italian, and even he wants to get out of italy…I have really never been treated like such shi* in my whole life, so really, I have completely lost all interest in italy and its people…yes ignorance is everywhere, yes there are nice people in italy too BLAH BLAH BLAH, but that doesnt change what happened, and what my experience was in that awful place, which made this foreigner always feel excluded from the italian culture.

On my last trip to Italy I constantly felt they were trying to rip me off, to glean every last Lira they could out of me, by constantly overcharging for the most meanial things like a glass of cold orange juice for example.

As a foreign tourist I never felt in anyway welcome, they seemed distant & contemptuous towards foreigners, especially a tour group like I was travelling with. They would push & shove in front of you & were often openly rude, like a situation that arose at a luncheon buffet at an autostrada pit stop a male Italian started complaining to the girl at the check out in a loud & dramatic manner, it was almost operatic. One of the Americans in our group spoke Italian & knew everything he said. We asked him what this jerks problem was, he said he was complaining about the f**king foreign tourist scum in large groups causing everyone else to have to wait in line behind them where ever he went, & he had had enough of it. The check out chick just ignored him.

As wonderful & progressive a country that Italy is with it's fantastic infrastucture, wonderful food, magnificant scenery & history, I wouldn't be in a hurry to ever got back there, & my last trip was my second visit to Italy.

Yep Italian hospitality really does suck.

Maybe I'm biased, but I lived in Italy. I'm not Italian, but I've never felt the solid acrimony people have expressed here.  Like anywhere I've lived, there are nice and not so nice people.  Italy is no different.
