Widget Contractor Association

Summary

John Smith used to work in the Widget business. Around 1990-1991, the economy was in a recession and there was not too much work. As such, John starts a career as a trainee in the financial business in 1990.

In 1993 John decided to go and get his Widget Contractor License. He did not want to wait too long as there is a 10 years statue of limitation on your experience. Any experience longer than 10 years can not be use to qualify for the contractor License.

As a new comer in the financial field, John income was minimal and needed extra income. As such John takes on extra work doing small widget jobs. The extra work helps supplement his income but was not enough to cover all his bills.

In 1996 one of his co-worker got a job at another financial company as a manager. She use her influence to get him a job at that company with higher pay and better position.

With the advancement, John no longer needed to take on extra widget jobs. He did keep his widget contractor license active just in case he might need to use it.

While taking on extra widget jobs, John meets members of the Widget Contractor Association. They seem to be a friendly group of people. John notices that the Association has a discovery membership for a small yearly fee. Even though John no longer involves himself with the widget activities, he decided to join the Association. He considers it to be a donation as the fee is as small as an amount that one would donate to a Charity.

Effective 1997, John was a discovery member of the Widget Contractor Association. John did not really think much of it. But then John notice that there is rumor in the grape vine that John is big time Widget Contractor. As time goes on, the rumors evolve and grow over time. It went from John being a big time Widget Contractors to him being a great Widget Contractor with 100 employees. And all the time, John was working in the Financial business.

In the beginning, John finds all the rumors humorous. But as time goes on, it started to get annoying. In 1999, John decided to cancel his membership with the Widget Contractor Association. John hopes that all these rumors will subside now that he is no longer a member of the Widget Contractor Association. But his hope was in vain.

In 2000 John was laid of from the financial industry. John decided to go into the Quality Control line of work. Through associates, he was able to get a job as a Quality Control inspector. He was able to acquire many useful skills, knowledges and experiences in the quality control field. But the rumor regarding him being a Widget Contractor continue even after 13 years since he last was involve in it and almost 10 years after he quits the Widget Contractor Association. John is befuddle with the persistent of this rumor.

Analysis

Trade Associations and the Widget Contractor Association specifically exists for the benefit of the trade and its members.

The Widget Contractor Association has different Chapter. The National Chapter, the State Chapter and the Local Chapter. The Local Chapter is used for networking. The State and National Chapters are there for influencing of political matters regarding the trade. One way of influencing political matters is through propagandas.

Another benefit to their members is word of mouth advertising. Through their propaganda machines, the Widget Contractor Association is able to give word of mouth advertising for their members. Even though many business advertise in the yellow pages, most of the works comes from word of mouth advertising.

As with all indiscriminate actions, there is unintended consequences. Thus indiscriminate word of mouth advertising for members will have unintended consequences. The following are some of the unintended consequences.

In the late 1980, the IRS is known for breaking into business and seizing and shutting down the business. Many of these are just base on rumor of activities that the IRS suspect and evaluated that it was not reported to them. And the IRS is correct that these rumor activities were not reported to them …..BECAUSE IT DID NOT EXIST. These rumors were created by the trade association propaganda machines as part of the word of mouth advertising scheme.

Thus the unintended consequences was that business were being seized and shutdown by the IRS. To counter these activities by the IRS, law was passed so that the IRS can not seize and shutdown business without concrete evidences. Thus end the era of the seize and shutdown of business by the IRS base on rumors.

Another unintended consequences is the web on lies. With indiscriminate word of mouth advertising, there is always inaccuracy by the propaganda machines. But no one will admit that they lie. As such, they will create more lies to cover up the lies they told before. The result a web of lies.

"Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive."

Note: The activities of the Widget Contractor Association is a platform for analysis. Propaganda exist in every industry and we must not believe everything we hear. Every industry have their own propaganda but no two propagandas are the same. Each industry is unique in their propaganda. But it exist. Acknowledging the existence of propaganda is the first step in seeking the truth.
