I came home from work today to find what must have been at least a dozen huge flies buzzing around in my house. I can't find where they're coming from, though. I looked all around in the kitchen and wash room and looked all through the basement but I simply couldn't find the source. I don't smell anything rancid and there's nothing but canned good in my cupboards and what's not in cans is either boxed or in Rubbermaid containers. I had some mice a couple weeks ago but I put out traps and those seemed to get rid of them pretty quick. I caught two in the traps but one morning I went down and a trap had been sprung but nothing was in it. I haven't had anything in them since. The only thing I can think of is that a mouse got caught but managed to escape then eventually died in the wall or something. Wouldn't I smell it though? I have two cats but they don't seem to care one way or the other and aren't sniffing around anywhere and I clean out their box every day so I don't think that's it.
Any suggestions or thoughts about the flies? Am I just overreacting and this is just one of those things that happens? I bought a box of fly strips and put a few up in the kitchen, wash room and cellar in hopes of catching the buggers. It's driving me nuts and giving me the willies at the same time.

Over reacting.
Having lived in a frat house for a number of years, I say with certainty that the normal human being is completely capable of living safely with the common house fly. The fly strips will fix the problem.

I hate flies and really hate them inside the house. Run some lemon down your garbage disposal and put all your fruit in the refrigerator.
An unusual remedy went around the internet a few years ago that I actually found worked, but I don't know why. Take a blue bag from walmart (I believe they no longer are blue, sorry.) Put a little water in it and a penny and hang it up close to where you will be. It seemed to work, even outside. I know it doesn't sound likely.
My cats chase and play with flies, now. They don't kill them but will play with them until they lose their wings and can't fly. Of course, the lamps, drapes, and other items are in danger when they are trying to catch them!

Yeah, that seems to be the consensus. It just sort of freaked me out that all of the sudden I had a mess of flies buzzing around in my house. The strips seem to be doing their job, though. Still haven't any idea where they're coming from.

I hate flies too! I use Windex (or any glass cleaner) to kill them. When they land, just spray like crazy trying to hit them. It usually disables them so you can pick them up.
And you can clean around the house as well when you wipe up the Windex!

Well, I hope there are not SO many flies in a home that your entire home gets a cleaning!
Usually, a fly will land on the bare wall. Sometimes the window, which Windex is good for. I wouldn't spray a sofa or bed, but wood furniture is fair game.
Not alot gets clean. I love chasing flies with Windex b/c its easier to nail them than with a fly swatter. That spritz covers a wide area and knocks the fly down to the floor where you can kill/dispose of it.

Windex, huh? I guess it must be the ammonia that does the trick. I'll have to give that a try if only for the entertainment value of it. I wonder if it works on mosquitoes as well?

I'm happy to report that the flies are gone, it seems. I never did find where they were coming from (Big Mikes's diagram aside .) I spoke to a friend who does carpentry and mentioned this to him and he seems to think they were probably resting under my vinyl siding and came out when the temps rose the other day.
