I was out marking some timber this afternoon. I walked up to a big southern red oak to mark it for cutting, planted my foot on the rocky hill side.
Felt the "squishy stick" under my boot.
Heard the rattle.
Felt/saw the snake strike the side of my right leg, and get turned away by the snake chaps I wear (the funny brown pants).
Wet myself.
Collected a nice trophy.

| At 40 inches long, it's not the biggest rattlesnake I've ever stepped on. But still enough to give ya a good fright. Attachment: Stretchedoutsmall.JPG (Downloaded 70 times)

| Six rattles and a button make a LOT of noise when the snake is angry. That's a really big Timber Rattler for the area I am currently working in. Attachment: rattlessmall.JPG (Downloaded 68 times) Last edited on Wed Jul 15th, 2009 11:17 pm by Big_Mike

Ha! That's exactly what I imagined you look like! A big burly man with a reddish beard.
Maybe a psychic is my true calling..

The only snakes that live around here are harmless little gardener snakes... make good prey for the neighborhood cats...

It pays to be safe, Mike. If he'd have gotcha, you'd a been a gonner - or at least a one-legged woodsman...whew!
Most I ever got nicked by was a little ol' pygmy rattler. Barely broke the skin on my thumb, but turned all the knuckles purple.
They say you can train these critters to wag their tails. Y'think?

Dunno, never let one live long enough to try it.
Where I live, rattlesnakes are somewhat rare. I usually see two, maybe three a year. And when I see them, I am usually standing on them, or next to them (the little buggers are very well camouflaged). Either way, still close enough for rational thought to cease and "self preservation" instinct to kick in.
No one likes to have a 300 pound Scotsman River Dance on their back.

University policy is that I can't carry a gun. Otherwise, I'd have my .40 on my hip at all times.
Snakes aren't the only dangerous things I run into out there. I've been within 20 ft from a 750 lbs black bear and surrounded by a pack of grey wolves (both in Michigan's UP), and here I've got to deal with snakes, marijuana growers, and meth cookers.
To be honest with you, I'd rather deal with the snakes. I came up on a marijuana plantation last year where the guy had hung up fishing line all the way around his plantation, and strung the fishing line with fishing hooks at eye level. Fortunately, I'm quite a bit taller than the average person, so when I got snagged on the fishing hook, it caught me on the neck, and not the eye.

Ah the UP - god's country.

Whenever I cross the Big Mack, I take a deep breath, and all the tension flows out of my body instantly. I know I'm home.
