I saw this just 3 weeks ago on a road trip through Britain.
When first erected it raised a lot of contraversy.
It is Britains largest free standing statue & resides on the ouskirts of the northern English city of Newcastle Upon Tyne. It weighs 200 tons stands 20 metres high & has a 54 metre wingspan.
The wingspan is wider than that of a jumbo jet & if tipped in it's side, it's height (wings) would be taller than the statue of liberty.
Over 100.000 motorists pass it everyday on the busy A1 motorway which actually runs behind it.
Some facts about the ‘Angel of the North’:
It is made of weather resistant steel, containing copper, which forms a patina on the surface that mellows with age
Below the structure are massive concrete piles 22 metres deep anchoring it to the solid rock beneath
The body is hollow to allow for internal inspections with an access door high up on a shoulder blade
It is built to last for more than 100 years and withstand winds of more than 100 miles per hour
There was a large wedding party up there for their photoshoot when we arrived. It is a popular spot for that no doubt.
