10-08-2009: Police on Mallorca are investigating whether an explosion in a bar in Palma on Sunday morning, originally thought to have been caused by a gas escape, could have been a fourth device planted by ETA in the island’s capital. The bar was closed at the time of the explosion. It’s understood that forensic officers were at the site on Avenida Comte de Sallent on Monday morning to inspect the scene of the blast.
The blast in the Bar Nica came at 12.30 pm, an hour and a half after a number of warning calls in the name of ETA were made from France to 3 different locations in Spain. They warned of three devices set to go off between 12 and 6pm on Sunday in restaurants and bars in Palma. All three devices were planted in ladies toilets, but there were no injuries in any of the blasts. They came after the fatal attack in Calvià at the end of July which killed two Civil Guard officers, for which ETA claimed responsibility this weekend. Police investigations are now centring on whether or not the terrorists used a timer to explode these latest bombs. If timers were used, it could mean that those responsible may have already escaped the island.
