Forgive me but I'm not really as familiar with central banking as I should be. It would seem silly to me that the Fed would create credit out of thin air when they have many other ways of manipulating the money supply. Secondly, I know that the Fed would never make significant loans unless a commercial bank was in significant trouble (which, as we all have seen, happens, but still...).
Does the Fed only create money when it hands out loans?
Can you recommend a book on the subject?

There are 8 parts, taking 80 minutes. I think crookster was the first one I saw post these, but they do a really good job of explaining the fiat money system.
