"Contra", means "against" or "counter to".
Oh don't worry about, I got thru college and to this point in my life without a single person ever uttering the word contra as opposed to the far more recognized contrary. As I find it unlikley I run into any more as foolish as you, I'll get by.
But hey, I'm glad that Word of the Day Calander you've got is doing what it is supposed to. Making you feel smarter than you actually are. Little other reason anybody would use that word. Kudos for you.
Hey, not my fault you live among people with small vocabularies.
SP: "Calendar"
I must apologize though, I completely missed the post where you made the link to the "charter". You perhaps overlooked the first paragraph:
"RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS IN CANADA. 1. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society."
Notwithstanding the bleatings of those you quoted, Mr. Eby is well known here in BC and wears his "Sky is falling" t-shirt on a regular basis and one can always find a lawyer willing to say almost anything for instance, I believe the part I underlined above would hold sway. I further believe most of the people who have lost loved ones or who have been permanently paralyzed or disfigured by a drunk driver and the majority those of us fortunate enough not to have sufferred such a tragedy, would also agree such a regulation would be a "reasonable limit".
You clearly disagree and as I said earlier, I sincerely hope you don't experience the horror of losing a loved one to a drunk.
Too bad you havn't the guts to see first hand what these irresponsible bastards can do to a family. If I had the say-so, anyone killing somone while driving drunk would be getting a mandatory death sentence. No appeal.

Great White,
I really enjoyed reading the most part of this thread. i agree with everything you have said. I just had to sign up to this forum just to tell you so. But beware of forces out there, like this Realitycheck person, that can consume your time and distract you from being more productive on these matters elsewhere. This person, for whom I am not aware of their sex, race, age, etc.. is obviously living in an 'alternate' reality. I can only judge them on their written words. This excuses all possibility that i'm racist, sexist, or anything else of the sort. This person has no objectionable prosecution of your defense for freedoms, and can only seem to try to discredit his/her opponent. I'm surprise he/she hasn't called you a conspiracy theorist, or a terrorist hahah. He/she would do great in politics. The whole world, needs more people like you GW.
As for you Realitycheck, you said you're not a cop, etc.. which is fine if you are, or you are not. I think maybe you may work in a hospital or health care, which again is fine if you do, or if you do not. you seem to hint that you have seen things that we have not. Like, really bad car accidents, or has had someone close to you get hit by a drunk driver. But one thing i don't think you are realizing is that you are comparing drivers/accidents for which the person was probably wasted beyond all limits of 0.0whatever-the-f@#k, to drivers for which have had a police officer stand in front of them, talk to them, and can NOT tell whether they have been drinking, can't smell any alcohol, can't sense any reason to doubt their innocence.
If a police officer, or anyone for that matter, does not have reasonable probable cause, then the person is likely TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE JUST FINE!!!!!!!!!!. And, should not have their rights and freedoms taken away.
It's a fine line we draw in the sand. If the law makes a limit of 0.08, or whatever it is, do you really think that people are ok to drive at 0.07, and at 0.09 they will smash into someone for no other reason than being drunk and causing a horrendous crash, where lives will be lost. NO, they wouldn't make the limit that fine. You are wasting your time and legal resources trying to catch these people who are at 0.04, 0.05, 0.06. If you are willing to give up your freedoms for this, then get out of canada, move to the USA, they LOVE giving away their freedoms.
As for me, i have had someone close to me get hit by a drunk driver. It doesn't change my opinion. The drunk driver was wasted!!! Hit my friend, then HIT A HOUSE, AND DROVE OFF!!!! WTF?? who does that? i'll tell ya, someone who is WASTED!!!! Not someone who has 0.04 to 0.09. Three teens recently died in my area by a drunk driver, they were walking. the drunk went off the road, hit them, went down into a ditch, up the other side, took flight right into a house. Who does that??? someone who is WASTED!!!!! Not someone who has 0.04 to 0.09. On a side note, the same accident can happen if a driver falls asleep. DON'T WALK ON THE SIDE OF A HIGHWAY at 3am!!!
P.S. Great White, if Realitycheck wasn't here, i would have read your post and moved on. but since he/she said what was said, i couldn't help myself but sign up, and post. Now you see, this person is consuming my time as well as yours. Let's move on to better things......

“Those who give up their freedoms for security, deserve neither!” Benjamin Franklin
Realitycheck, i really hope you come to understand some day my brother/sister, that the powers that be, want all our freedoms taken away. They will not stop until all have diminished and their power can no longer be challenged.

Well, you and GW should get a room. I am sure you'd be able to provide great support for one another. Two paranoid anarchists together should be able to come up with some more paranoid fears and feed each other off them. You are already well into the country of the conspiracy theorist, both of you.
I don't know whether you are ignorant of the fact or just ignored it. Many people will be "Wasted" at .02, .,03, .04. Possibly the bonhead in your stated example was one of these.
BTW, welcome to the forum, I love to see people like you and GW have a place to spout your nonsense, keeps the rest of us feeling sane.
Oh and who cares what Ben Franklin had to say? Means bugger all.
