I don't think anyone seriously believes in the prophecy, however the subject is fascinating on a cultural/anthropological level....

I have a roommate who beliefs in this stuff.

You should put on a Mayan mask one night and wake him up from a dead sleep... that would be funny!

I have a friend who says he believes in the stuff, too.  I think it's more that he wants to believe something fantastic than he really thinks it is real.

Who pee'd in your Wheaties?

If you've read what I've written in this thread, time and time again I've clearly emphasized the Venus Transit cycle. That's not "superstition" or "pagan". That's serious astronomical science.

The thread topic is about the Mayan calendar, and what if anything it "predicts". It predicts, mathematically, a very rare astronomical alignment. If some mesoAmericans chose to refer to such an event as a Feathered Serpent, why should that bother you? You can choose to call it whatever you feel like. Even the "Flying Spaghetti Monster".

Before people go thinking that any "belief" in any of this is unsupported scientifically... guess again.

Some things we are just now beginning to get a handle on. Such as particle entanglement. Which directly violates 2 long held scientific "beliefs". That action at a distance is not possible, and that FTL is not possible. Particle entanglement demonstrates both those beliefs to be false.

http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/news/34499

As was correctly pointed out earlier in this thread by someone else, the light we see here is often thousands of years old. So that at the time we "see" the event aligned, that is in fact the light energy after it has physically traveled thousands of light-years from its source.

And, in theory, an advanced civilization could very well have witnessed the results of the combinations of energy that are present during such an alignment. Knowing that when such an alignment occurred again, it would have equally destructive influence. Knowing this, and calculating when the next such alignment would occur, that civilization would have thousands of years to warn us to prepare for it.

IF they possessed a particle entanglement transmission technology. A "quantum broadcast" if you will. Such a technology is constrained by neither Time nor Space. It influences entangled particles instantaneously at any distance. We ourselves are exploring the first baby-steps with the foundations of this technology as we speak.

This isn't science fiction. It's science fact.

Seems this thread has reached it's lowest level now. Time for a shift to the UU2 boards with all of the other Doomsayers who will applaud having so many gullible tales to joke about.

Actually, the science being discussed is good for otherwise technologically uniformed people to be exposed to what we're really working on at the cutting edge these days.

Interplanetary communications technology is about as "foreign" as it gets. And this is the Foreign board.

I agree qm. This thread is foreign to many, which makes it even more of a candidate for the UU2 Boards. Conspiracy Theory subjects belong there.

The existence of the Mayan calendar, and the information it contains, are a matter of archeological scientific fact. As is Astronomy.

There's nothing "conspiracy" about Science.

Anyone remember the Y2k nonsense.....

Christians of course don't believe that anyone knows when the end times will occur. "No man nor even the Son knows the time, but the father only"

That has always mystified me, as Father, Son and Holy Ghost are supposed to be one.

But then, the Bible is an interesting collection of self-contradicting myths.

Y2K was hardly "nonsense".

It's because it was treated seriously and counteracted that it never became the problem it could've been. Not because the issue wasn't genuine.

Btw... the Mayan calendar doesn't claim to predict "the End Times". Only a rare celestial alignment. Albeit, one with a history of evidence that associates it with major climate changes and possible pole shifts.

THE UNIVERSE IS EXPANDING

SPEED OF LIGHT

nothing faster in universe

186000 miles per second---OR SAY 300,000,000 METRES PER SECOND----((The speed of light is so great that light can for many practical purposes be regarded as traveling instantaneously))

SPEED OF LIGHT SYMBOL--c.

The speed of light is a fundamental physical constant of spacetime, the speed at which electromagnetic radiation, including visible light, travels in free space. It is an upper bound on the speed at which matter and information can travel. The speed of light is usually denoted by the symbol c.

Speeds faster than that of light are encountered in physics but in no such cases is any matter or information transmitted faster than c. The speed of light also plays a role in general relativity, and is believed to be the speed of gravitational waves. THE WAVES THAT EXPLAINED GRAVITY WHICH NEWTON DIDNT KNOW! BUT WAS WORKED OUT BY A 28 YEAR OLD PATENT OFFICE CLERK IN SWITZERLAND----NAME EINSTEIN--SOME 260 YEARS LATER

The universe is 185 million light years wide, and contains over 100 billion galaxies-WE ARE ONE OF THEM

so E=mc2--- E=ENERGY    M-MASS C=SPEED OF LIGHT 2 MEANS SQUARED [ENERGY AND MASS ARE OF THE SAME CONSTITUENT

Order of appearance

                                     SUN---- PLANETS------MERCURY-VENUS-EARTH-MARS-URANUS-
NEPTUNE-SATURN-JUPITER

Earth
Moon
Mercury
Mars
Venus
Uranus
Neptune
Saturn
Jupiter
Sun/Sol
Sirius
Pollux
Arcturus
Rigel
Aldebaran
Eta Carinae Nebula
Betelgeuze  --(yes--- like ( BELLA LUGUSI)

Antares
V382 Carinae
V838 Monoceretis
V509 Cassiopeiae
Mu Cephei
KY Cygni
V354 Cephei
Binary Star VV Cephei
VY Canis Majoris -....THE LARGEST KNOWN STAR

Earth(formed 4.54 billion years ago)(approx a third of universe)

AGE OF UNIVERSE
13.7 billion years

SUN HAS ANOTHER 1.5 BILLION YEARS LEFT AND IS MOVING TOWARDS THE EARTH AT THIS MOMENT

END OF EARTH APPROX 1 BILLION YEARS [GIVE OR TAKE]

NOW WHAT ALL THIS MEANS IS THAT NEO CONS COME FROM Pollux
BUT NEVER TRY TO SHOOT A NEO-CON WHEN YOUR DRUNK-----YOU MIGHT MISS-

Umm... Wrong.

Particle Entanglement. Instantaneous across any known distance.
