Israeli Navy Seizes Ship Allegedly Carrying 60 Tons of Missiles
Wednesday, November 04, 2009
JERUSALEM — Israeli commandos seized a ship Wednesday that defense officials said was carrying more than 60 tons of missiles, rockets and anti-tank weapons bound for Lebanon's Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrillas.
The pre-dawn seizure in the waters near Cyprus was a rare interception of a suspected arms shipment by Israel, which has long accused Iran of arming its enemies. Israel offered no evidence to support its claim that the weapons came from Iran and were meant for Hezbollah.
Israel and Hezbollah fought a bitter war in the summer of 2006 that ended with a U.N.-brokered cease-fire, but occasional flare-ups occur.
Wednesday's seizure was bigger than a similar haul in 2002, when Israeli military confiscated a vessel with 50 tons of missiles, mortars, rifles and ammunition headed for Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

glad they got ahold of this shipment.
...On Wednesday, Israeli defense officials said weapons including anti-tank missiles and Katyusha rockets were stashed on a commercial vessel operating under the guise of an aid ship, captained by a Pole and flying an Antiguan flag. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the military had not officially released the information...
...An employee of the company's chartering department who would not identify himself said the ship had been bound from Egypt to Cyprus and from there to Lebanon and Turkey. He said the company did not know what was inside the containers or where the cargo originated.
The employee asked that his name not be used because the company had yet to formulate an official response.
UFS' niche is bringing cargo to small ports not called by big container ships.
A senior Lebanese army official refused to comment on the Israeli report, saying it happened outside Lebanon's national waters. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.
A Hezbollah official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he did not want to speak publicly to the media, said the Islamist movement had no comment on Israel's claim.
"We are following the case and we will see if it is worth a comment," he said.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak called the interception "another success against the relentless attempts to smuggle weapons to bolster terrorist elements threatening Israel's security." Netanyahu said the arms supply "was intended to hit Israeli cities."

Loxy3. Be carefull here, passing such information on as you did.
You must know how the typical responses will come at you from those on the Left who hate Israel.
They will come here telling you that the ship was merely loaded with tons of Fireworks, and Firecrackers for the upcoming celebrations by Hezbolla for their new found Independence Day that Iraq will authorize soon.
Those Palistinians have as much right to celebrate as every American who celebrates here in this nation on the 4TH of July....with ILLEGAL Fireworks.

I'm sure those on the left will say that it was all just a big misunderstanding.. That the terrorists were supposed to be getting FOOD and not Weapons in those containers..
Dont Worry Loxy... The Israel haters will shy away here... they have no foothold to defend a shipment like this... those are OFFENSIVE WEAPONS...not defensive..
I kinda hope they do show up...I can keep throwing the Ben Gurion speech from 1947 at them... That almost always shuts them up.

Let us know what you have been doing for your country and maybe we can give you the benefit of the doubt!
Israeli force have every right to confiscate any weapons they find. Yes Iran and North Korea have been provind weapons to forces wanting to destroy every Israeli they can lay their hands on. It will never stop. Major port of call in that region is Eygpt, so there needs to be more monitoring there.
Arabs do not want peace...when I sa Arabs I also efer to Muslims who want the entire western world purged so they can rule by the Tribal rule.

What's wrong with Hezbollah rearming?
Let us stop pretending that you people care about Israel for any reason other than that you enjoy it when they bomb muslims.

So shouldn't the shipping manifest have been siezed along with all the supposed bang-bangs? If the Israelis were able to sieze the weapons, they couldn't secure the manifest? Why not grab the documentation of the "evidence" if it really went down that way?
One thing that IDF personnel are not... is sloppy.
This smells of BS.

Absolutely mind-boggling. I truly hope the majority of those on the left cringe whenever one of there own posts something as over-the-top as this.

and you expect them to just release that info to satisfy inquiring minds?
If these were not going where they said they were, then where would you suggest they were going?

LOL. Last I checked, the IDF kills Palestinian and Lebanese civilians at a far greater rate than then Hezbollah or Hamas can reciprocate.
What's mind-boggling is how irrational your excuses for Israel are.
The U.S., Israel, and Palau are about the only countries who think Israel should be able to keep doing what they do.

Would you care to explain, in a factual and reasonable manner, what Hezbollah and the Nazis have in common?

If what Heresy wrote above IS representative of the majority of those on the left, and how they feel. They should be coming here in DROVES to applaud Heresy for being JUST LIKE THEM.
At least we know how little mental power is required to make oneself look so stupid. Is that right Heresy, or do you require even less?

You're not a stupid man Quanty so no need in pretending to be. I think you know very well that a group like Hezbollah as well as the Iranian guard use front and shell companies all over the world from Lebanon to South America to conduct their activities.
The companies listed will be checked out diligently by Mossad over the next few months. Also, ship manifests may get cumbersome after awhile and other manifests left around the captain's quarter from previous runs so Israel probably doesn't want to let hezbollah and Iran know which specific covers have been compromised

I wouldn't be surprised if it was destined for Hezbollah.
What did Israel think would happen after last Christmas's blood bath in the Gaza? That Hezbollah would just let it go?
Two things will probably come from the Israeli West Bank campaign:
1) because of all the hundreds of women and children killed by Israel, LOTS more money/arms will come in from international sources.
and 2) the Palestinians/Hezbollah will not bother so much with crude, home made, near useless rockets. They will now want only the proper ones that can be accurately targeted and can carry far larger payloads.
Everytime Israel's leaders ramp up their cruelty, the 'enemy' ramps it up as well. All it leads to is more dead Palestinians and more dead Israeli's. Nobody wins.
Israel is fighting a losing battle - the question is when will they realize it?
