Hi. I'm going to be going to Caracas sometime early next year. I've spent time in Cuba and Costa Rica, but this will be my first trip to South America. I'm going mostly because I am a big supporter of Hugo Chavez and I want to see the country while he is in power (which hopefully will be for a long time).
Like any other big city I've visited (NYC, London, etc.) I worry about crime. I've heard that you have to steer clear of the Taxis there. I know some Spanish, but not fluent (I need to practice).
So... what's your advice to someone coming to Venezuela for the first time? Also... are there any good message boards where you can meet people? It would be nice to have some people there that I "know".
Thanks.

WHATTTTT??? how come you say you support Hugo Chavez? you dont even speak fluent spanish? youre not even from Venezuela? or what, are you latin? How come you support him, a man who has Venezuelan people looking like idiots? That man only wants to be the next Castro, or do you support crazy Castro too? A man that has his people in a big missery afraid of even saying what they think? Easy for you to say right? you live in a powerful country full of liberty, know what youre supporting!!! Support liberty, culture, education, leadership not dictatorship, and if youre planning on visiting Venezuela, poor people, another idiot is on it way. Hello? use your mind if you have one!! I'll take your points one at a time.....
WHATTTTT??? how come you say you support Hugo Chavez?
Because, he is one of the few politicians who is actually trying to make a difference for the better and he was freely elected. The president in my country stole his election. He has less than 25% approval rating and our economy is worse now than before.
You dont even speak fluent spanish? It is hard to speak a languge fluently if you do not speak it every day. Believe me, I've heard a lot of people give heated opinions on the US government in broken english. How would it look if I said, you can't speak english, you are not entitled to an opinion?
youre not even from Venezuela?
No. One of the reasons I want to go there is so that I can see things for myself. People always complain that North Americans think only of themselves and blindly say that their governemnts are the best... yet... when a north american is willing to look to other countries/economic models you are critical? I am from the US... you think people who are not from here do not have opinions on if we're great or horrible? Get real. We -all- have opinions on other countries.
That man only wants to be the next Castro, or do you support crazy Castro too?
Yes, I do. I have spent time in Cuba and used to work on projects for their Ministry of Health. My opinion is based on what I experienced while I was there and from the Government officials I spoke to.
A man that has his people in a big missery afraid of even saying what they think?
None of the people I know who were born and still live in Cuba feel that way, so I can not really comment on that one.
Easy for you to say right?
Again....... are you honestly going to tell me that no one out side the US has praise or critizim for our government? My opinion is based on what I know right now. Will it change as I learn more? Maybe... maybe not. I'm keeping an open mind.
I'm not one of these people who thinks the US is better than everyone else so it's not even worth it to learn about other forms of Government.
People come to the US from far away countries knowing nothing more about the US than they see watching Friends and they're regarded as "freedom seekers"
People look to other countries from the US and they're seen as idiots?! I refuse to believe that the US has the only viable government.
I will say that I understand how frustrating it is to hear people have opinions about your country when they do not live there. I can not tell you how many times I hear people talk about the US as if it were one big episode of Beverly Hills 90210 and you would not believe how people are always telling me what it is like in NY when they were never there and I grew up there. Even still though... I would *never* discourage those people for coming to have a look for themselves or from learning all they could.

Hello again:
Look, let me get something clear with you, I am in the U.S.A too , I know how this goverment works too, the difference is that I do am hispanic, the latin-american society we are all one (or most of us), I do critize the Bush administration, as well as the Mexican, Cuban, ect... but I know how it feels to live and to be part of a 3rd world country , yes, you have lived in Cuba but you were an employee, not a citizen, yes, Chavez is showing the colors of his country that has a high rate of poor, but, do you honestly think, making fun of other countries that are the same is a good way to care of his people??? I dont think so. He has all the right to dislike the USA, many people hate USA, but, why saying those things about the Mexican President, Mexico can not move to other place, sorry, it is, has been, and will be a neighbor, and has to care for the international relationship . About Cuba and Fidel, well dude, I contrary to you, have heard many cubans cheer of joy and sadness for being out of their country, now I dont say that Cuban people cant say anything about their dictator, everybody knows that, not only me. When I mention you dont speak enough spanish, I said it because, is not the same to hear what Chavez says, to hear what he says after a translation, not that you dont have the right to give your opinion . Latin american countries--excluding Cuba--are democratic countries where its people can say whatever they want, actually in countries like Mexico and Argentina, people can make fun of their presidents without fear. I personally would not like to hear that Venezuela has lost its freedom due to a dictatorship. Chavez its heading that way--my opinion--. Thank you. Go to Venezuela and learn live not by news, Im 100% sure its people will threat you right and with an open heart, thats how we latins are.!!!!

Don't worry about the taxis... crime is everywhere, just be aware and you'll be fine. You should make sure to spend time in areas like Catia and La Candelaria, I think you will find what you are looking for.
Out of curiosity how do you feel about robert mugabe? are you a fan of his social reforms too?

Well welcome to visit our beautiful country. I have a lot of contacts who are involved with the whole "Venezuelan Process". I will be most delighted to show you around the city of Caracas when I have some free time. Advice I can give you, don´t go out drinking at night on your own, try to stay in a group. Do not visit the west of the city unless you are entirely sure of where you are going and who are you meeting.
Well, carryng cameras around like "a tourist" is out of the question.
I leave my skype contact, which is the same "coritoj", my language is german (country Venzuela) and anybody wishing to ask anything about Venezuela is welcome to contact me.
Any person writing abuse will be blocked.
I hope this was of any help.
Cheers from El Valle!

Hello, I think is a wonderful idea that you decided to visit us soon. I have several contacts who are pretty much involved in the whole "Bolivarian Agenda", some in offices some working directly with the people. My friends and I have received people from Spain and Austria interested in knowing what is going on in Venezuela. Some others just come fur fun.
I advice you, not to go alone drinking, if you decide to go out at night go with a group of people and stay with them. Don´t let yourself be stranted (hard to happen if you are within people you know). Do no visit places in areas away from the commercial district unless you know exactly where you are going and who are you going to see.
I think thats about it.
You can get in touch with me through SKYPE my name there is "coritoj", my language is german. Anybody who wishes to know about Venzuela is free to contact me. On the other hand people with nasty attitudes screaming abuse will be banned.
Have a nice trip.
Hasta la Victoria Siempre........SALUD y Anarquí@

hi,
I am from turkey and really wonder your country and Hugo Chavez. I strongly want to see Venezuela but I don't know anything about this Conutry. On the other hand, I don't know whether I would be able to supply enough money for such a visit since I don't know the cost of living in Venezulela. I need information. thank you very much.

hello! venezuela is like the wild west. The crimerate is among the highest in the world. (213 homicides in caracas itself dec 2004) the curruption is very bad and safe place in venezuela you have to look for. A good suggestion is to bring dollars into the country and change them on the blackmarket (chinese resaurants are good) you will get approx 2500bs for a dollar while in italcambios you only recieve 2150bs. Don't change with people on the streets and stay away from caracas, it's one of the ugliest cities I ever been to. The girl are suppsoe to be incredibly beautiful but I can't really agree with that. They look better in Colombia. People doesn't seem to work, they drink and use drugs everyday. But people are very friendly and often they don't want anything from you but some people are the opposite. If you get caught for a crime you can recieve special treatment or often get away with it because the police are so corrupted from top to toe. caracas is also about twice as expensive as the rest of the country. I recomend anyone who goes to venezuela to visit choroni, merida, loss llanos, los roques,orinoco.... the most exciting thing for me was to visit one of caracas barrios (shantytowns) the poeple are so poor but the friendliest people i ever met. the rich people in venezuela is nothing for me, they don't care about the rest (80% live in poverty) if you arrive at maiquetia airport (caracas) the safest and cheapest way to get to caracas is with the airport bus which leaves outside the terminal. I don't recomend you to stroll around in caracas at night, not even go to the biggest busterminal (la bandera) when it's dark eventhough you have to catch a bus when it's dark. people especially in smaller towns will stop you and talk to you and try to help you, they are very nice but like any other part of the world there are bad people. If you get mugged give them everything and than I mean everything. people will help you like they helped me. I was stranded in a barrio in caracas without a dime for a week because of my foolishness but it was the best time of my life. i lived with a family who fed me gave me monet etc. they where pretty poor but because they live together they have a better life. I was sorrounded by crackheads, gangmembers, killers (one guy even told me that he actually killed a guy),drugdealers and prostitutes but nothing happend to me. I wasn't even scared. people treated me like a king, offered me things, hepled me. And they all knew that i didn't have a single dime on me. I became friends with everybody and that's why i stayed there for more than a week until a planeticket was arranged for me. The locals even shouted my name on the street after 2 days eventhough i never seen them. It was a great experience and i still have contact with the family and call them once a week and have email correspondence on reguarly basis. i have never seen so many people consuming drugs i my entire life. there was cocaine, crackmarijuana in every corner but the the end of the they no one bothered me becuase why should they? they didn't have a reason to harrass me or shoot me or hurt me. Like USA gangs shoot eachother for their colour but not in venezuela a young drugdealer told me because in venezuela we only hurt eachother if we have a reason, e.g i steal their drugs, i do something stupied but if you behave you can survive for 80 yrs. i felt safe but sometimes a bit strange. A pretty girl which I became friend with told me "you are crazy because you're here" it's the first time she ever seen a tourist here. She asked me if i'm scared but at the same time she told me that i'm safe here if i don't start stealing, selling drugs, hitting people. If i behave nothing will happen to me. back home i can get my ass kicked just by looking at a girl to much....
I strongly recomend venezuela
take care

Hello I came across this website because I was looking for people from venezuela to talk to. I was born in Valencia and I grew up in Maracaibo until I was 8 , then I moved to the US and have not returned to my home country, Venezuela which I love! Just like you I live in America, you are so blind and have no idea what you are talking about. America is the best country to live because we have liberty, FREEDOM! We all have equal opportunity to education, equal oportunity for careers, jobs, to feed our families. We have healthcare, police who actually care about society and its people. We have a court system that punishes criminal not endorse them! America has checks and balances for everything. If you don't like Bush fine, honestly I don't either, but I am not about to trash a country that has given me the chance to go to college, for my mother to afford her own house and work and be safe! A country that offers endless possibilities if you work for them! In case you didn't know Bush is not who makes the decisions those in congress do, he's only the front man who lets you know what decisions are taken, and of course there for you to blame. It seems to me like you are a little spoiled rich kid that knows nothing of what you say. Chavez is a dictator and man as sadistic and power hungry and Castro you could even compare him to Hitler. This man is stealing from the people, Venezuela is not getting any better and his been in power for a while. Do you think it is fair that people who work hard for what they have should earn and have as much as someone who does nothing. That's how people in Cuba live. Doctors make as much as janitors. Imagine if your father went to school for 12 years to become a doctor and your next door neighboor never went to school, and your dad and his neighboor ended up living the same in a shack with nothing! That's how the people in cuba are, thats why they risk their lives to swim over into the gulf and enter the US. so before you go on supporting something you have no idea of, learn of it. YOu live in the greatest country of the world. Don't let some power hungry man deceive you. ALso remember that Jesus died for you. He loves you and suffered a terrible death for you. And when you repent of your sins and call upon the name of Jesus you will be saved! ![[allamerican]](/forums/themes/default/allamerican.gif)

Venezuela is a beautiful country, its places, people and everything is wonderful. I was born here and I've lived my entire life here. I remember (just a little bit) good times before Chavez and I can assure you it would be better for you visiting Caracas before 1998. But, let me to tell you: here, if you're lucky you can live in peace and to have a good education, like me, and many of the people I've meet.
Do you support Chavez? I really hope you don't know a little bit about what this man have done... I really hope... Because if you have... Que Dios te ayude.... (God help you)
If you're seriously considering to come, PLEASE, learn spanish before, we doesn't need to bury another kindnaped person, especially a foreign one... We have enought victims here.
Have a nice trip, enjoy paradise as I do
And please... come for the country, not for the politics

Hello,
Thank you for all the advice... but how can I get from one place to another if I cannot trust the taxis? i.e. how do I know which taxi to trust in Caracas?
Thanks...

I visited Venesuela about a month ago (June 2008) and stayed for 22 days and i was realy surprized. I'm from South Africa and are involved myself in security systems and other security issues for small to medium enterprizes. We live daily with a risk to be hijacked or even worst. house break-ins and violent crimes in your own home are realy bad. We can not barbeque in our gardens without looking over our own shoulders ( the criminal element )..........
Well the visit in Caracas was surprisingly fantastic. I've read alot about crime in Caracas and other areas in Venesuela. I realy thought that it's the wild wild west in Caracas.
Genarally i use a small camera in the main city centre and a well used watch, i got a light skin complex and surely i look like a tourist from "Europe". but i try to blend in as much as posible. I only speak English and found it difficult to order food in a arepa restaurant. but i tried. I traveled alone in Caracas, Santa Puerto, Barinas and Santa Domingo.
I met a taxi driver which was english speaking and in so many situations i used him as a translater specialy when i fly from a airport to another town. Security wise i did not felt threatend, unsecure or afraid in Caracas or any town.
Yes Venesuela do got problems but i respect each and every person staying in your country. Yes fuel are very cheap and you do know that use it and enjoy it. Politically it will improve in Venezuela, rather pray for our neibours in Zimbabwe and other parts of the world which are worse off.
thanx so much for the hospetallity and frienlyness in the areas i've visited.
