We will be there in February.  What do you recommend for the following:

1.  Spas (for a massage)
2.  Restaurants
3.  Bars at night
4.  Daily trips or tours

My husband and I live at Pueblo Bonito for two months every winter, so I can offer some helpful information:

You asked for it: The tours that all the hotels offer in Mazatlan are fluff.

If you prefer to eat fluff-n-utter instead of Filet Mignon, then you will probably be happy with any of the fraudulent tours offered by any and all of the hotels in Mazatlan. If you prefer to find some of the “insider” places, you will have to go a bit off the beaten path.  The reasoning behind this is simple:  The hotels figure - “why go to all the trouble getting our "tour wagons" dirty, when we can just rip people off ?”
I might suggest you contact the East Pacific Surf Camp:

 http://www.learntosurf.info

They took our grandson to a place to the north that is basically a nature and sea-turtle reserve on a winding river at the edge of a rustic, country, ranch.
When he returned from surfing, he was going on and on about his incredible discovery.  He begged us to come with "Allen and Javier" and see - which we did.

Just getting to the beach from the little town is a real treat because the road leading to the water has a lush, forest canopy. The ranch is very beautiful with trees, hundreds of years old, and has semi-wild horses running around.

When you get to the water you will find miles of virgin beaches. I think this would be a great place for couples to go and spend a day.  When you get hungry, the fishermen will cook you their catch of the day right on the beach…  Get in touch with the camp.  They are busy in the summer with surfing clients and in the winter they have more free time.  Good Luck!!

Thanks for a great reply!  We will jump all over that.

Do you have any answers for 1, 2, or 3 above?

If you want a great REAL tour, go with Frank. He is a great tour guide and he does not do the tours like the "FREE" ones given at time share presentations. Those are done by Jewelry stores. His website is http://www.mazatlan-frank.com

Just do a search on google or any searcher for Mazatlan-Frank to see some great reviews. Enjoy Mazatlan!

Its funny actually, that someone is talking about the guys at the surf camp.  In September we were at Pueblo Bonito and Javier and Allen did a great job with our two daughters with the surfing. "Oregon" did such a great work explaining their trip, that I will try equal Oregon´s effort and offer the experience we had:

The next day, a nice guy from the surf camp, Alen took us to the Canyon "Los Altares" (I believe it to be called) way, and I mean WAY up to the high Sierra Madre.   We saw about 40 or maybe 50 tall crystalline waterfalls with rainbows, huge cliffs going thousands of feet straight up and down covered with Ponderosa pines.  He took us to the top of the road which is at about 9,500 feet!  We saw rustic little towns and a river that crosses right over the main road!!  Then they took us to a town near to Copala, but I can´t remember the name of it.  It is about 10 times more beautiful than Copala!!

This town is not easy to describe.  It is a gold-mining village with about 300 or 400 people.  Just as you are about to arrive, the road winds toward a small viewing point where you can stop and peer down into the village. Immediately you will notice the old, European-style architecture, like a town you might see in the Alps, (a result of good mining fortunes perhaps.) There is a river that comes plunging out of a steep mountain pass making a big, waterfall and a beautiful pool right in front of the old church!

This green, jungle paradise is obviously, known only to a select, lucky few.   As far as "Oregon" saying that the hotels don´t offer anything good... I agree 110 percent!  If you are from the East Coast, the Great Plains and have never seen the Rocky Mountains, then you can take a break from the "fluff" and taste that clean, thin air up there.  Best of luck for getting it with some great weather !!

Our grandson took the advice "Sara" and went up to the mountains with two of his friends from the Tech de Monterrey and the guys from the surf camp.  Here is one of the pictures they got just as it was getting dark.

We took the mountain tour last summer and Javi and Allen took us panning for gold.

We thought it would be a joke until we came back with enough real gold to...

Good tour.  We had lots of jellyfish and we went to pan gold. It was fun and we got some gold chips...
