I am going to Cozumel in the ending of feburary.  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to places that do not revolve around tourists.  Any beaches, lagoons ect that not many people know about, but are worth finding out about?

Hi,

We're going February 5-12. I wish we would have booked when you did because our beloved Casa Del Mar will not open 'til Feb. 16. We had booked it for 542.00 includes breakfast bar and 50.00 drink voucher. They moved us up to Hotel Cozumel and took away our amenities. I'm totally against "all inclusive." It defeats the purpose of going to Mexico and experiencing the culture, ect. This will be my 6th trip. The most remote spot on the island is at the point northeast on the "wild side." If you rent a jeep, you can drive all the way up and it's a lot of fun if you're not used to 4 wheeling. There are group tours that drive up there on little 4 wheel gators or whatever. You can ask at Mescalitos. It's the joint which is supposed to have the nude beach. It's just an option, though as it is a very big beach compared to the rest of the island. I'm really anxious to get over there to see what Wilma has done. These Palapa type places can be easily rebuilt. Whether they have chosen to do so is another ?

Basically, you can drive all the way around the island and there will be an endless amount of beaches that are not connected to bars and restaurants. The East side or wild side is not real good for swimming. There is a lot of coral, but no end to the seclusion. I prefer to just go south on the diving side where all the resorts are and just walk down the beach away from the beach clubs that are in the area. Colorado beach. San Francisco beach. I feel better when I buy something from them and then just take my cooler and stuff for a walk.

Where are you staying? Are you planning to go to Playa Del Carmen? I have advise on that too. (a must!) I will be able to give you exact details when I return. Any more questions you have, please feel free. Hopefully we can all learn something useful from this.

Hi,

In regards to the places open on the "wild" side, everything is rebuilt, Wilma hit Cozumel hard but they did such a good job, more beautiful than before. All-inclusive, I totally agree. For good tours, activities and beach clubs, there are tons of offers but only a few are "real" good. Check out San Franciso Beach or browse the web like cozumelwatersports.com. be sure to get to the recommended operators, we made quite some qestionable experiences but now we found out. Good stay in Cozumel....we love this island...

There is a wonderful beach area on the oposite side of the island.  The sand is white and hardly no one goes there.  A taxi will take you if you let them know you want to go to the white beaches.  Also there is 4 wheeling on that side.  There are a few shops but because people don't know about it not a lot of people go there.  It is a lot of fun but be careful because the current is a little stronger over there.  Have fun.

[allamerican] Hello

We are going to be in Cozumel with a cruise on Feb. 7th. My husband wants to go 4 wheeling. How do I discribe how to get to the "White Sand Beaches" and how long do you think it will take us to get from the ship?

Hi there,

4-wheeling or ATV, Jeep tours, yes take the transversal (only road that crosses the island...cannot be missed) and drive to the end of it, there is Mezcalitos. There is also an ATV tour through the jungle visiting Mayan ruins....feel free to visit my site for any related info, have fun on couzmel!
